I had breakfast one day with Mike, a well-known and highly successful CPA, who had sold his firm and was now the CEO of a dynamic company. He got tired of what he was doing as a senior partner and one day just quit. What he said in the next few minutes is why I am passionate about what has evolved over the past 15 years of my practice, “Significant Strategic
Planning.” My friend quickly found out that his leaving did not really impact the company, although, a number of the relationships he developed have continued for years. He said to me, “Robb, when
everything was done and I went on to the next part of my career, even though we were successful from
a business perspective, I didn’t feel successful. I asked myself this question, “Mike, do you want to be
successful or significant?” He shared with me that what was really missing in his business life was in fact, “significance.” He reminisced
about all those times driving in the car with his family and asking everyone to be quiet so he could talk to
his client after hours. Mike spoke with regret over the many golden opportunities he missed to really connect with his wife and kids. Many years have passed and today he is focused on leaving a legacy in his ceO
